Partnership for a joint Doctoral Training Programme

There is an increasing emphasis on the use of mathematics and computer sciences in various studies and sectors of life. However the universities in DR Congo and in the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) are poorly equipped to prepare professionals in these fields. There is a lack of qualified professors of mathematics and computer sciences. The few there are need training to up-date and refresh their specialist knowledge.

To overcome this difficulty, the project aims to prepare qualified teachers in mathematics and computer sciences, to help university staff and mid-career professionals to get training and refresh their specialist knowledge and be exposed to international academic best practice.

The main activities of the project are:

  • One-year joint training programme of Master 2 (DEA) in mathematics and computer sciences.
  • University staff training.
  • Establishment of a network of international groups of research.

One-year Joint Training Programme

This programme will be achieved through partnership cooperation between two Congolese universities and one European university. The University of Kinshasa (DRC) and the Marien Ngouabi University (Congo Brazzaville) will combine their experience and knowledge with the expertise of the University of Stockholm to achieve this training. To ensure effective partnership and sharing of best academic knowledge, these three universities will establish a network of international groups of research in mathematics and computer sciences. These groups will have a key role in managing and teaching in the joint training programme and similar training initiatives.

Developing Curricula and Training of Teachers

The second activity of the project will be the training of university staff in teaching and research before the implementation of the one-year joint programme for students. The university staff will have the opportunity to update their knowledge and techniques and be exposed to international academic best practice. Mid-career and senior teachers will refresh their specialist knowledge and receive training on latest developments on their fields of research and interest.

Expected Results

One concrete result of the project will be the training of 60 students who will be ready to get their Ph.D. in mathematics and computer sciences in the joint doctoral training programme. These students will contribute to solving the big problem of lack of qualified professionals and professors in mathematics and computer sciences. The joint training programme will provide the opportunity for lasting cooperation relations between the participating ACP and EU Higher Education Institutions.
